336. Reviving the 200-year-old Grantham Canal
Formed in 1969, the Grantham Canal Society is undertaking the huge task of restoring a 33-mile canal dating from the Industrial Revolution, over 200 years ago. I went up to see how they're getting along.

There are some aspects of the boat's refurbishment that simply can't be achieved (or are difficult to do) while it's in the water so in this video I took the boat from its mooring at Stourport a little way down the river to a wharf where it's been hauled out so that I can work on it on dry land. You wait eight years to do a Dutch barge video then two come along at once... This time, I'm looking at the question of what do you do if you want a custom-designed boat to live on but don't have the budget to buy a new-build? Well, you buy an old but sound boat and tear out the interior for a refit and that's just what Gabs Heneghan has done. In this first episode following her progress, we se...

Is that the lock keeper's cottage Stenwith at 9.06? Went inside when it was a 'lost place' about 8 years ago, amazing history with many of the original features still intact? It looks different in the film; has it been sold or is it being looked after now?

Thanks for sharing this video on a fantastic subject. I just don't think the majority of the people of Britain realise was an incredable asset they have in the canal network. However what absolutely astounds me is the number of landowners who are unsympathetic to having, when needed, an existing canal on their property restored or in some instances cut through a very narrow slice of their land. If it was me, I would be absolutely delighted to have a canal run through my property, what an honour. Best regards from South Africa

Omitted because it varies enormously depending on where you take your boat, how long the boat is, how many coats you want, the type of blacking used (etc). As a rough guide, it was about £10 per foot of boat length when this was done.

I´m on medical retirement and I´d love to do a bit of that stuff when/if I´m able but the government agency in charge of the medical retirements in my country (not UK) would remove my pension if I even tried. Even if it did not lead to me rejoining the work force the therapeutic value for my quality of life would be huge, the law/rules say I could try for a few hours per week but reality says I´d loose my income if they got wind of me trying beyond a single day, so I dare not.

I'm sorry, but I really don't understand why, or who makes the decision to 'get rid of a canal'? It was there, functioning, and used, .........? It would have cost a lot of money to remove locks/bridges, etc! Why? Thank goodness that she's being finally restored!

The canals were built for industry and commerce but were usurped by the advent of the railways so the canals gently fell into disrepair and disuse hence were eventually declared abandoned.

On this particular canal there are two reservoirs that were built for it but only one is in current use and water supply is a constant issue they hope to overcome.
